British Values

British Values Statement

At North Cerney Primary Academy, our vision is for everyone to set a positive example in what they say and how they live. As a close-knit community, the way we behave and care for one another is central to daily life. Our Christian vision underpins everything we do, while recognising that many of these values are shared across different faiths and cultures.

British Values are woven naturally into the life of our school and closely linked to our core Christian values of perseverance, courage, curiosity and respect. Through these shared values, we help our children grow into thoughtful, confident and caring members of modern Britain.

British Values are promoted through our curriculum and through spiritual, moral, social and cultural education. Learning opportunities encourage pupils to develop the skills, attitudes and understanding they need to play an active role in their school, village and wider society. All staff model these values daily, helping children to see what they look like in practice.

Through our approach to British Values, pupils are supported to:

· Understand the difference between right and wrong and begin to understand the role of rules and laws in our country

· Take responsibility for their own actions and contribute positively to school and village life

· Develop respect for public institutions and services that support our community

· Understand the importance of tolerance, harmony and respect for different cultures, traditions and beliefs

· Show kindness, fairness and respect towards others

· Develop an age-appropriate understanding of democracy and how people can have a voice

Democracy

Democracy is an important part of life in our school. In our small community, children know that their voices matter. Pupils are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions, and

adults take time to listen carefully and respond respectfully. Children are also taught to listen to one another and value different viewpoints.

Opportunities such as class discussions, school councils or pupil leadership roles allow children to experience democracy in action. When decisions are made through voting, pupils learn that everyone has a fair chance to be heard and that majority decisions should be respected.

The Rule of Law

The importance of rules and laws is reinforced consistently, whether in the classroom, across the school, or within the wider community. Clear expectations help children understand how we live and learn well together. Our behaviour policy supports positive behaviour and explains that choices have consequences.

Children are taught that rules and laws exist to keep us safe and to help everyone get along. Through everyday situations and discussions, pupils learn that breaking rules can put themselves and others at risk, and that responsibility and fairness are important.

Individual Liberty

Within our nurturing village school environment, pupils are encouraged to make choices and develop independence in a safe and supportive setting. Children are supported to express their views, make decisions and take responsibility for their actions.

Through PSHE, collective worship, class discussions and online safety education, pupils learn about their rights and personal freedoms and how to use them responsibly. They are encouraged to be confident individuals while understanding the importance of boundaries that keep everyone safe.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our school community. Children are taught to treat one another with kindness and consideration, recognising that everyone is unique and valued. Working together in mixed-age groups and learning partners helps pupils appreciate different strengths, abilities and perspectives.

We emphasise every child’s right to learn and feel safe. Pupils are encouraged to think carefully about how their actions affect others and to take responsibility for creating a positive learning environment.

Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Although we are a Church of England school, we actively promote understanding and respect for different faiths, beliefs and cultures. Through Religious Education, PSHE and collective worship, children learn about a range of beliefs and traditions.

This learning is enhanced through visitors, educational experiences and the celebration of significant festivals. Children are encouraged to ask questions, show curiosity and develop an understanding of their place in a diverse society, while learning the importance of tolerance and respect for others.

As a whole school community of pupils, staff and governors, North Cerney Primary Academy is committed to promoting British Values through everyday interactions and learning experiences. We aim to ensure that all pupils leave our school confident, respectful and ready to play their part in modern Britain — rooted in strong values and a sense of belonging.
